Reshaping gum and bone when needed

What is crown lengthening?

Crown lengthening is a gum procedure that exposes more tooth surface when a fracture or decay sits under the gum, or when there is not enough room for a crown without violating supporting tissue. It is offered after examination, not as automatic smile cosmetics.

When is it discussed?

  • A fracture or cavity that extends below the gum
  • A tooth that needs a crown without enough biologic width
  • A restoration edge that constantly irritates the gum
  • Selected appearance-related cases after assessing the smile and gum line

Care path

  1. 01Measuring how much tooth is visible and how it relates to bone.
  2. 02Explaining whether extraction is safer if too little tooth would remain.
  3. 03The surgical visit under local anaesthesia if you agree.
  4. 04Healing, then crown or filling preparation at a later visit.

After the procedure

Sensitivity can appear because more tooth is exposed. Gentle cleaning around the wound matters. The final crown is not prepared until the gum has stabilised, as judged clinically.

Medical note

Crown lengthening changes gum shape and can make a tooth look longer. It is not suitable if the remaining root is too short. Alternatives include extraction and replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What is crown lengthening?

It is an adjustment of gum and sometimes bone to expose more tooth so a restoration can have healthy margins. It is not orthodontics and not whitening.

Is it painful?

It is done with local anaesthesia. Afterwards, soreness and swelling are expected and managed with pain relief and care instructions. Comfort varies.
