Are dental implants painful?

What local anaesthesia and the days after implant placement usually feel like, and why people differ.

Fear of pain is a common reason to delay implants. Placement is usually done with local anaesthesia, so the area is numb during the procedure. After the anaesthetic fades, pressure, swelling, or soreness can appear. It is managed with medicines and instructions, not by ignoring it.

What changes how it feels?

  • How many implants are placed and where they sit in the jaw
  • Whether the gum must be lifted or bone work is needed
  • Previous inflammation in the area
  • Rest and cold packs in the first two days

It is not accurate to say implants are painless for everyone. It is accurate to say most general-clinic cases are done with local anaesthesia, with a review if pain is beyond what was described. Dr. Majed Sabbah explains what is typical for your situation before you agree.
